Description

Do you want to prepare birthday cake boxes for those in need?

WHAT DO I NEED TO MAKE A BIRTHDAY CAKE BOX?

  • 9×13 disposable aluminum foil pan – The ones with the lids work great because you can package it all up neatly!

  • 1 box of cake mix - any flavor

  • 1 can of frosting

  • 1 can of Sprite or other lemon-lime soda (store brand will work).

    • Soda is used in case the recipient doesn’t have eggs or oil.  Include a note to simply combine the cake mix with the can of soda and bake according to the box directions.

  • Birthday candles

Of course, you can add more things if you would like. Great additions include birthday tablecloths from the dollar store, sprinkles, colored frosting tubes, streamers, birthday plates, etc.

WHY DO I ADD A CAN OF LEMON LIME SODA?

Did you know that you can make a delicious cake out of nothing but a box of cake mix and a can of lemon-lime soda? Well, you do now! Not everyone has eggs and/or oil on hand. Imagine how disappointed you’d be if you got a birthday cake box but didn’t have the other ingredients to make it.

If you are interested in doing a DIY Volunteer Project with your group, please follow these simple steps:

STEP 1: Call United Way before starting your DIY Project so that we have can discuss greatest needs in the community and your timeline. We also need a little lead time to touch base with partner programs to make sure your kits go where they are most needed and to ensure our partners have the time to prepare to receive them.

Contact: info@marshfieldareaunitedway.org or call 715-507-5005

STEP 2: Make a plan of action plan for your group to gather/buy/solicit materials and assemble the kits. Your plan should include the following:

  • Purchase the suggested items OR host a drive or fundraiser to purchase items.

  • Assemble the kits. All kits should have most of the above items or additional items. Just place all of the things you wish to include in your birthday cake box.  Use the disposable 9×13 foil cake pan as your 'box'. If you have purchased one with a lid, attach the lid to the top. If you are using lemon-lime soda in your birthday cake box,  add a little note explaining that you can make a cake without eggs, oil, and water by simply combining the cake mix with the can of soda and baking according to the box directions.

  • Include a homemade card or drawing. Sign it "From a family who cares."

Have fun with this and celebrate your time working together to help others in our community!

STEP 3: When kits are ready, contact the United Way once more for final assistance in coordinating where they should be dropped. Whenever possible, we will have groups drop their kits directly at the local agencies that will distribute them, but the final drop location will depend upon storage capacities at our partner agencies.

STEP 4: Spread the word! Tell others about your experience and about these opportunities to create more DIY projects!
